WHAT WE DO

Every property is different, so most projects start with a walk through the yard before anything gets scoped. Here's how we group the work:
  • Hardscape
Most projects start here — a paver or natural stone patio, a driveway built to carry real vehicle weight, a walkway connecting two parts of the yard, or a retaining wall holding back a slope. We work mostly in paver, matched to how Charlotte's clay soil behaves underneath it.
  • Drainage & Grading
Water pooling near the foundation or a yard that never quite dries out usually comes down to grading or a missing french drain, and it's often handled as part of the same project as a patio or driveway rather than as separate work.
  • Irrigation Repair
For yards that already have a sprinkler system, we repair broken heads and valves, get systems ready for winter, and update older setups.
  • Landscaping
Garden beds, mulch, sod, and plant selections chosen to hold up through a Charlotte summer, not just look good on the day they go in — which also means less water and fewer replacements down the road.
  • Lighting
Low-voltage lighting along a path or against a retaining wall, usually added once the hardscape and planting are already in place.
  • Design
A full plan for the property — layout, materials, and how each part connects — worked out before anything gets built, whether it's one feature or the whole yard.
BUILT FOR CHARLOTTE'S CLAY SOIL
Charlotte's red clay holds water and shifts more than sandy or loamy soil, which is why base preparation matters more here than the paver style on top. Every patio, driveway, and walkway we build starts with a compacted gravel base sized for how the surface will be used — foot traffic for a patio, vehicle weight for a driveway — with a slight grade to move water away from the house rather than toward it. We work mainly in paver, with natural stone and brick used where they fit the style of the property.
HOW A PROJECT STARTS
Consultation
We talk through what you're picturing for the space before anything gets measured or scoped.
Site Visit
We walk the yard in person and take the measurements a real estimate depends on.
Drone Photos & Video
Aerial photos and video show how the whole property lays out, not just what's visible from the ground.
Estimate
A clear estimate before anything is scheduled.
HOW WE WORK
Every project starts with understanding how you actually use the space — where the sun sits through the day, where you'd want to sit in the evening, what's already growing well. From there we work through material and layout options together before anything is built. Plant selections are matched to Charlotte's climate and to the specific light and soil conditions of the yard, not just picked for how they look on day one. The same team that scopes the project sees it through to the final walkthrough, and any required permitting or documentation is handled properly as part of the process, not left for the homeowner to sort out.

ABOUT US
Hortus-Flora is led by Vladimir, who trained as a civil engineer at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, graduating in 2012, and spent several years working in construction, building hands-on experience before starting the original firm with his wife in 2015. That engineering background carries into every retaining wall and drainage plan — not just how something looks, but why it holds up over time. Hortus-Flora LLC continues that same work in Charlotte today, with a small team that also handles planting, floral touches, and coordination with a trusted plumbing partner for backflow-related work.
Do you handle both design and installation, or just installation?
Yes — design and installation together, start to finish.
Do you install new irrigation systems?
No — we repair, winterize, and modernize existing systems.
Is drainage handled separately from a hardscape project?
Usually not — grading and drainage are typically addressed as part of the same project.
Do you work on front yards, back yards, or both?
Both.
Is landscape lighting available as its own project, or only with other work?
We prefer handling a project start to finish, from design through installation — it's how we keep quality consistent. That said, if all you need is the lighting itself, we can take that on as its own project too.
