Drainage Services

  • French Drain Installation

A buried perforated pipe system that redirects standing water away from the house, patio, or low spots in the yard.
  • Yard Grading & Lawn Leveling

Correcting low spots, pooling water, and uneven ground, often done before sod, seeding, or a hardscape project.
  • Catch Basin Installation

A drain box set into a low point of the yard to collect water and route it away through connected piping.
  • Downspout Drainage

Extending downspouts underground so roof water is carried well away from the foundation instead of dumping right next to it.

Why Charlotte Yards Need Drainage Work

Charlotte's clay soil doesn't absorb water quickly, which is why yards here pool water and stay soggy longer than yards with sandier soil. French drains and grading fix this by giving water an intentional path to follow — away from the foundation, patio, or wherever it's currently collecting — instead of leaving it to sit or find its own way.

How We Work

Drainage problems usually look simple on the surface — water pooling in one spot — but the actual cause is often somewhere else in the yard entirely. We trace where water is coming from and where it needs to go before deciding whether the fix is a French drain, a grading correction, a catch basin, or some combination of the three. Getting the diagnosis right up front is what keeps a drainage fix from becoming a recurring problem.

About Us

Hortus-Flora is led by Vladimir, who trained as a civil engineer at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, graduating in 2012, and spent several years working in construction, building hands-on experience before starting the original firm with his wife in 2015. That engineering background carries into every retaining wall and drainage plan — not just how something looks, but why it holds up over time. Hortus-Flora LLC continues that same work in Charlotte today, with a small team that also handles planting, floral touches, and coordination with a trusted plumbing partner for backflow-related work.

Frequently Asked Questions

— How do I know if I need a French drain or just regrading?
— It depends on where the water is coming from and where it needs to go — a French drain moves water that's already collecting, while grading changes the slope so it doesn't collect there in the first place. We diagnose this on-site rather than assuming one fix upfront.
— How much does drainage work cost?
— It depends on the scope and what's actually causing the problem — we provide a written estimate after the site visit.
— How long does drainage work take?
— It depends on the scope — the timeline is part of the written estimate, not a fixed number we give upfront.
— Does drainage work have to be part of a bigger hardscape project?
— Usually — drainage and grading are often addressed alongside a hardscape project, though we also take on drainage-only work where hardscape isn't part of the plan.
— Can drainage be added around an existing patio or walkway without tearing it up?
— Yes — a French drain or catch basin can usually be routed around an existing patio or walkway without needing to rebuild it, depending on where the water needs to go.
