Repairing the Base Before Resetting Pavers
A paver surface follows whatever is underneath it. When a section sinks or tilts, lifting the pavers and adding a little sand puts it back level for a season, and then it settles again in the same place.
In Charlotte, red clay holds moisture and can move as water enters and leaves the soil. If water reaches the paver base or the edge restraint fails, sections can settle, spread, or become uneven. So the repair starts by lifting the affected area and looking at the base: how deep it is, whether it was compacted, and whether water has been washing material out from under it.
Where the base has failed, it is rebuilt and compacted in layers before the bedding layer is screeded and the pavers are relaid to match the surrounding surface. A lasting repair focuses on the base, the drainage route, and the confinement around the pavers — not only on replacing the visible damaged pieces.
What Is Included in Paver Repair
The scope is set after the site visit, once the cause of the problem is clear. Most repairs combine several of the following.
  • Re-Leveling and Replacement

Sunken or uneven areas are lifted and relaid over a corrected base. Cracked, damaged or badly worn pavers are replaced. Where the original paver is no longer available, we discuss the closest match or moving existing pavers so the new ones sit where they are least noticeable.
  • Edge Restraints, Joints, and Cleaning

Pavers that spread at the perimeter need their confinement restored, so existing edge restraints are repaired or new ones installed. The surface is cleaned when required, and joints are refilled with polymeric sand, which binds once wetted and resists washing out.

Patio, Walkway, and Driveway Paver Repair

The same approach applies to every paver surface, but the loads differ. A patio or walkway carries foot traffic. A paver driveway carries vehicles, so ruts and dips there usually point to a base that is too thin or was not compacted for that load.
Drainage Problems That Cause Paver Failure
Water is behind most paver repairs. A downspout discharging onto the patio, a yard that slopes toward the paving, or a low spot where water sits will carry bedding sand and base material away a little at a time.
If the repair resets the pavers and leaves the water where it was, the same section fails again. Where that is the cause, the drainage and grading is corrected as part of the same job — redirecting a downspout, regrading the edge, or adding a drain — so the repaired area stays dry underneath.
  • When Repair Makes Sense

The problem is limited to one or a few areas, the pavers themselves are in good condition, and the rest of the surface is flat and stable. Lifting, correcting the base and relaying those sections costs far less than starting over.
  • When Replacement Is the Better Choice

Settlement runs across the whole surface, the base is too shallow throughout, or the pavers are worn out. In that case repairing section by section costs more over time than rebuilding on a proper base, and we will say so at the site visit.

About Us

Hortus-Flora is run by Vladimir, a civil engineer who graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 2012. After several years on construction sites, he and his wife founded the original firm in 2015. On a repair that means finding why the surface moved, whether base, water or edging, before a paver is relaid. It is the same way we approach a retaining wall or drainage job. Today Hortus-Flora LLC does that work in Charlotte with a small team, which also takes care of planting and floral details and brings in a trusted plumbing partner for backflow work.

Frequently Asked Questions

— Why are my pavers sinking?
— Almost always because of what is underneath: a base that is too thin or was not compacted, water washing material out, or failed edging that lets the pavers spread. The site visit is about finding which one it is.
— Can you repair just one section of a patio?
— Yes. If the rest of the surface is stable, only the affected area is lifted, the base corrected and the pavers relaid to meet the surrounding surface.
— Can you match my existing pavers?
— Existing pavers are reused wherever they are in good condition. For replacements we look for the same product or the closest available match; older pavers weather, so a new piece may look slightly different at first.
— What is polymeric sand and why does it matter?
— It is a joint sand with a binder that sets once it is wetted. It holds the joints, resists washout and limits weeds. Joints that have emptied let pavers shift, so refilling them is part of most repairs.
— Will the repaired area settle again?
— Not if the cause is corrected. That is why the base, the edge restraint and the drainage are checked before the pavers go back down, rather than only re-leveling the surface.
