What's Included
A footing set below frost depth, gravel backfill and a drain line behind the wall to relieve water pressure before it builds up, and coursing in block or natural stone matched to the style of the property. Getting the drainage right behind the wall is what keeps a new wall from becoming a leaning one in a few years.
When a Wall Needs an Engineered Design
North Carolina sets a height at which a retaining wall has to be designed by a registered engineer rather than built to standard detail. Under the current residential code the threshold is five feet, measured as the cumulative height of the wall, and a tiered system is treated as one wall where the tiers sit within fifteen feet of each other horizontally.
The four-foot figure still quoted on a lot of contractor sites comes from the previous code cycle and no longer matches what the code says. Which side of the line a wall falls on is established during the site visit, from the actual grade change, not estimated after the fact — it changes both the scope and the cost, and it is the kind of thing that is expensive to discover once a wall is already going up.

Retaining Wall Builders in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and Union County

Hortus-Flora LLC builds block and natural stone retaining walls in Charlotte and across Mecklenburg and Union counties, with drainage planned behind the wall. Hortus-Flora is run by Vladimir, a civil engineer who graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 2012. After several years on construction sites, he and his wife founded the original firm in 2015. Walls are where that training is used most directly: footing, backfill, drainage and height limits are settled on paper before the first course. The Charlotte team is small on purpose. It covers the build, the planting and the floral details, and coordinates backflow work with a plumbing partner it trusts.

Frequently Asked Questions

— Does a retaining wall need a permit?
— It depends on the height. Walls above the code threshold need an engineered design before they can be permitted; walls below it are built to standard detail. Which applies is established from the grade change during the site visit.
— Why does drainage behind the wall matter so much?
— Without a way for water to escape, pressure builds up behind the wall over time. That is the most common reason walls eventually lean, bow or fail — more common than the wall itself being undersized.
— Block or natural stone?
— Both are structural when built correctly. Block is faster to course and more predictable in cost; natural stone suits properties where the wall is a visible feature rather than a retaining element. A block core can also be faced with stone veneer.
— Can a tall grade change be handled with two shorter walls instead of one tall one?
— Sometimes, but not as a way around the engineering requirement. Tiers set close together are treated as a single wall under the code, so the height is counted cumulatively.
— What does a retaining wall cost?
— Height, length and material drive it, along with access for machinery and whether an engineered design is required. A written estimate follows the site visit.
— Do you repair existing walls as well as build new ones?
