Sprinkler Winterization & Spring Startup in Charlotte, NC

Water expands as it freezes. A sprinkler system holds water in places that are hard to drain — low points in the lateral lines, valve bodies, the risers under each head — and when that water turns to ice it pushes outward against whatever is containing it. Fittings split. Valve bodies crack. Damage that costs a few hundred dollars to prevent turns into trenching and replacement in spring.
Charlotte does not freeze the way the upper Midwest does, which is exactly why systems here get left alone. A single hard night is enough.
What Winterization Involves

Every zone is cleared with compressed air, run one at a time. Air is pushed through the line until the heads discharge mist rather than water, then the zone is closed and the next one opened. Pressure is held to what the pipe material tolerates — the point is to move water out, not to force air through a system faster than the fittings are rated for. The visit covers:

  • Compressed-air blowout of every zone in the system
  • Water supply to the system shut off at the isolation point
  • Above-ground components insulated
  • Controller powered down for the season

Zones are done individually rather than together. Air takes the shortest path, so an open manifold clears the nearest zone and leaves the far ones holding water.

What Freezes First

The parts that fail are the exposed ones. Anything above grade at the supply point sits in open air with no soil around it, and it goes before the buried lines do. Above-ground piping and fittings are next.
Below grade, the risk is concentrated at low points where water collects and cannot drain by gravity, and inside valve bodies, which hold water regardless of how the rest of the line sits.
Heads themselves are usually the cheapest thing to replace and the last thing to worry about.
When to Schedule
There is no cutoff date on the calendar — Charlotte’s first hard freeze moves around from year to year, and scheduling follows the forecast rather than a fixed deadline. The safe window is once night temperatures start dropping toward freezing and before the first sustained cold stretch.
If a freeze has already come through and the system was still charged, it is worth having it looked at rather than assuming it came through fine. Split fittings underground do not announce themselves until the system is pressurised in spring.
Spring Startup
Startup is booked separately from winterization and covers the opposite sequence.
The supply is turned back on slowly. Charging a dry system at full pressure sends a pressure wave through empty pipe, which can do the damage the winterization was meant to prevent. Once the system holds pressure, each zone is run and watched: head coverage, spray pattern, rotation, and anything not coming up. The controller is reprogrammed for the season, since run times that suited last October are not what a lawn needs in April.
What Startup Usually Turns Up
Spring is when the winter’s damage becomes visible. Broken or sunken heads, a zone that will not open, a valve that will not close, a leak showing as a wet patch over a buried line. These are repaired as part of the same visit where the scope allows, or scoped separately where a line has to be opened up.

Can I just drain the system myself instead?
— Draining by gravity clears the lines that fall toward a drain point and leaves the rest. What stays behind is water sitting in low spots, valve bodies and risers, which is where the damage happens. Compressed air is what clears those.

— It depends on what's actually wrong with the system — we provide a clear estimate after the on-site diagnosis.
How long does winterization take?
— A single visit. Time on site depends on the number of zones, since each one is cleared individually.
What does it cost?
— It comes down to the number of zones and how accessible the manifold and supply point are. A larger system takes proportionally longer.
My system came through last winter without being winterized. Do I need it?
— A mild winter is not evidence the system is safe, only that it was not tested. Freeze damage is cumulative — a fitting that cracked but held will fail later.
Is startup included with winterization?
— No, they are separate visits at opposite ends of the season and are booked individually.
Do you install new sprinkler systems?
— No. The work is repair, seasonal service and modernisation of systems already on the property.
