What's Included
Installation involves excavating to the proper depth, compacting several inches of crushed stone base in layers, laying the pavers on a levelled bedding layer, and locking the perimeter with edge restraints so the field does not spread outward under load. Joints are filled with polymeric sand to keep pavers locked together and discourage weed growth between them. The driveway is graded to move water away from the garage and foundation rather than toward it.
  • Why Paver Handles Clay Soil Better Than a Poured Slab

Because a paver driveway is made of individual units rather than one poured slab, minor ground movement from Charlotte’s clay soil tends to show up as small joint shifts rather than a single large crack. If that happens, individual pavers can be lifted and reset — a poured concrete slab does not offer that option.
  • Often Paired With

A driveway is commonly built alongside a walkway connecting it to the front door, or matched to an existing paver patio so the materials read as one property rather than separate additions.

Paver Driveway Installers in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and Union County

Hortus-Flora LLC installs paver driveways in Charlotte and across Mecklenburg and Union counties, with a base built to carry vehicle weight on clay soil. Vladimir, who runs Hortus-Flora, is a civil engineer by training. He graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 2012, worked in construction for several years, and started the original firm with his wife in 2015. A driveway is a load problem, so the base is sized for vehicle weight and the edges are restrained before a single paver is laid. In Charlotte, Hortus-Flora LLC is a small team that builds, plants and adds the floral finishing touches, working with a trusted plumber when a job involves backflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

— How is a driveway base different from a patio base?
— It is deeper and compacted in more layers, because it carries vehicle weight rather than foot traffic. The same surface area takes more excavation and more stone than a patio does.
— Paver or poured concrete?
— A slab is one piece, so ground movement under it shows up as a crack across the surface. A paver field is individual units, so the same movement shows up in the joints, and the affected area can be lifted and reset.
— Can a single damaged paver be replaced?
— Yes — pavers are lifted and reset individually rather than the surface being redone.
— How do you keep weeds out of driveway joints?
— The joints are filled with polymeric sand, which hardens once it is wetted and leaves seeds very little to root in. On a driveway the joints also take tire wear, so expect to top them up every few years to keep them full.
— Will the driveway settle over time?
— Settling comes from the base, not the pavers. A base cut to the right depth and compacted in layers is what prevents it. Most settled driveways were built on a base sized for foot traffic.
— What does a paver driveway cost?
— It comes down to the area, the base depth the ground calls for, access for machinery, and the pattern. A written estimate follows the site visit.
