How Artificial Turf Is Installed
Installation starts below the turf. Existing grass, roots and organic material are removed, because anything that decomposes under the surface leaves a low spot later. The base is then built up, compacted and shaped so water has somewhere to go — on Charlotte’s red clay, which holds water, the grade of the base matters as much as the turf laid over it.
The turf is rolled out over the prepared base and cut to fit the edges, beds and any hardscape it meets. Rolls are joined with installation tape so the seam sits flat and the grain runs in one direction. The turf is secured to the base with specialized landscape nails along the perimeter and through the field.
Infill goes on last. It is spread evenly across the finished surface and worked down into the fibers, which helps the blades stand and keeps the turf weighted in place.
Where Artificial Turf Works Best
Turf is not a replacement for every lawn. It earns its place where natural grass keeps failing or where the area has to look finished all year.
  • Pets, Play Areas, and High Traffic

Pet zones, play spaces and the backyard routes that get walked every day wear grass down to bare clay. Turf gives those areas a surface that stays usable after rain and does not turn to mud. How the area will be used is discussed on site, because it decides which product and infill make sense.
  • Shade and Finished Appearance

Under mature trees and along the north side of a house, grass thins out no matter how often it is reseeded. Turf works in those shaded locations, and in front-yard or courtyard sections that need a consistently finished appearance without mowing or reseeding.

Turf Brands We Work With

Before and after: muddy side strip replaced with artificial turf
We work with artificial turf products from SYNLawn, TigerTurf, and FieldTurf. The right product depends on how the area will be used: a decorative front-yard section, a pet area, a play space, or a heavily used backyard.
During the site visit, we discuss traffic, drainage, sun exposure, appearance, and maintenance expectations before selecting the material.
Base Preparation and Drainage
Turf lets water through, but the water still has to leave the base underneath. If the ground below already holds water, new turf will sit over the same wet spot. The site visit looks at where water comes from, how the yard is graded and where it can discharge.
Where the yard stays wet, drainage and grading are handled before the turf goes down — regrading, or a french drain run beneath or beside the turf area. One of our Charlotte projects combined both, with a french drain installed alongside the new turf.
  • Artificial Turf

No mowing, watering or reseeding, and the surface looks the same in every season. It suits shade, pet areas and heavy wear. The cost is higher at installation, and the result depends on the base and drainage built underneath.
  • Sod

A natural lawn that is green from the day it is laid and lower in upfront cost. It needs sun, irrigation and regular care, and it struggles in deep shade or constant traffic. Where conditions suit grass, sod installation is often the better choice.

About Us

Vladimir, who runs Hortus-Flora, is a civil engineer by training. He graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 2012, worked in construction for several years, and started the original firm with his wife in 2015. Under turf that means a graded, compacted base and a planned way out for water, the same thinking that goes into a retaining wall or drainage plan. The Charlotte team is small on purpose. It covers the build, the planting and the floral details, and coordinates backflow work with a plumbing partner it trusts.

Frequently Asked Questions

— Does artificial turf drain after rain?
— Turf is made to let water pass through, but drainage depends on the base and grade underneath. We shape the base for drainage and, where the yard already holds water, correct that before the turf is installed.
— Is artificial turf suitable for dogs?
— Yes — pet areas are one of the most common reasons homeowners choose turf. Tell us about pet use at the site visit, because it affects which turf product and infill we recommend.
— Which turf brands do you install?
— We work with SYNLawn, TigerTurf, and FieldTurf. The specific product is selected for each project based on use, sun exposure, appearance and maintenance expectations.
— Will the seams be visible?
— Rolls are laid with the grain in the same direction and joined with installation tape, then infill is worked into the fibers. Done carefully, seams are hard to pick out in the finished surface.
— Can turf be installed in part of the yard only?
— Yes. Turf is often used for one section — a side yard, a pet run, a play area — and tied into planting beds, sod or pavers around it. The edge detail is planned so the transition looks deliberate.
