What Veneer Actually Is
A stone or paver facing set over an existing structural core — block, concrete, or masonry — rather than the wall itself being built entirely from solid stone. It gives the same finished look as full stone construction, but the structure underneath is doing the structural work, which is faster to build and less expensive than solid stone.

What’s Included
The core structure is prepared with a bonding surface, and veneer pieces are mortar-set in place, with corner pieces used at edges for a clean, finished line rather than a visible seam.
  • Where It’s Used

Retaining walls that need a more finished look than plain block, fire pit and fireplace surrounds, outdoor kitchen fronts, and foundation skirting where a home’s base needs to visually tie into the rest of the hardscape.
  • Often Paired With

Almost always a finishing step on another project — a retaining wall, fire pit, or outdoor kitchen — rather than a standalone structure on its own.

How We Work

Stone retaining wall with planting beds beside a house
Veneer work starts with the structure behind it. We check that the block or concrete core is sound, dry and able to take a bonding coat, because stone set over a wall that is still moving or holding water will crack and come loose with it. Then the stone is chosen: natural or manufactured, the color range, the joint style, and how corners and caps are finished. Pieces are laid out dry first, so sizes and tones are mixed across the wall before any mortar goes on.
How a Veneer Project Starts
Consultation
We talk through which surface is getting faced, whether a retaining wall, a fire feature or a kitchen front, and the look you want the stone to give it.
Site Visit
We inspect the existing core, measure the surface area, and count the corners and caps the job needs.
Estimate
A written estimate with the stone selection and any prep the core needs, before anything is scheduled.

Stone Veneer Installers in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and Union County

Hortus-Flora LLC installs natural and manufactured stone veneer on retaining walls, fire features, and outdoor kitchens in Charlotte and across Mecklenburg and Union counties. The company is run by Vladimir, a civil engineer by training (Bauman Moscow State Technical University, class of 2012) who worked in construction before founding the original firm with his wife in 2015. For veneer, that background shows up in the part nobody sees: whether the core behind the stone is built and drained well enough to carry a facing for decades. The Charlotte team is small, and the people who assess the wall are the same people who set the stone.

Frequently Asked Questions

— Is stone veneer as durable as full stone construction?
— For what it does, yes. The structural core carries the load and the veneer is a durable mortar-set facing rather than a decorative-only layer.
— Can veneer be added to an existing plain block wall?
— In many cases yes, depending on the condition of the existing wall and whether it can take a bonding surface. That gets confirmed during the site visit.
— Natural stone or manufactured?
— Both are options. Natural stone varies piece to piece and weighs more; manufactured is lighter, more consistent and usually less expensive. The choice comes down to look and budget.
— Why do corner pieces matter?
— A flat veneer piece stopped at an edge leaves a visible seam showing its thickness. Corner pieces wrap the edge, so the wall reads as solid stone rather than as a facing.
— Is veneer done on its own, or only as part of a larger project?
— Usually as the finishing stage of a wall, fire feature or kitchen, but it can also be done on its own where the structure is already in place.
— What does stone veneer cost?
— It comes down to the surface area, the stone selected, and how much preparation the existing core needs. A written estimate follows the site visit.
